Who should I reach out to about questions?

Every stream has its own Grant Coordinator (it will be Arizona, Forrest or Patricia). They will be the person who emailed you your funding approval, who you did your orientation with and who most of your emails should be from. Please reach out to your Grant Coordinator for any questions! If you are confused about who yours is, reach out to Sareema , Grants Manager at sareema@indigenousyouthroots .ca

What do I do if I am having issues running my project?

First off, know that it happens all the time. Lots of groups we work with run into issued or challenges. We encourage you to reach out to your Grant Coordinator, who acts as a project mentor for you. They will be able to brainstorm solutions with you, talk it through and identify what your options are. Sometimes your project may need to shift or change to navigate the challenges, and we are alwa ys happy to help support that.

How many people should my project reach?

Reach looks different for different projects. Some projects are focused on reaching big numbers of youth (like 500+ over one single event). Other projects are focused on reaching a small number of youth but with a deeper engagement (like 15 youth but weekly over several months). We’ve funded both types of projects!

Can I use funding from Creation to cover the costs of renting out a space?

Yes, you can use the funding to rent space. You can indicate the rental space on the budget you will submit with your application.

Can I use funding from Creation to cover the costs of honorariums?

Yes! Funding from Creation can be used to cover the costs of honorariums for participants, Elders, facilitators, as well as for project leaders. Please note however, that smaller grants, like the Youth Empowerment Stream, may have restrictions on how much funding from a Creation grant can be used for honorariums for project leaders. The specific limit is detailed in the stream’s funding guide.

What should be included in the application project budget?

Your application project budget should include all costs related to your project that you intend to cover using funding from Creation . Depending on your project, it could include: Project supplies and materials Costs tied to renting out a space Facilitator honorariums Elder gifts and honorariums Participant honorariums Staff salaries Snacks for participants Transportation costs Accommodation costs Administration costs, including trustee costs Contracts (like websites, software, hiring event photographers, etc.) Training opportunities for youth leaders, etc. Any part of your project that you plan to pay for using funding from Creation should be included in the application project budget!

What do you mean by “operating budget”?

When we ask for an “operating budget”, we are asking about how much money your group has access to over the course of a year. This amount should include all administrative costs, staff salaries, program costs (materials, renting out a space, snacks, etc.), honorariums, etc. This budget spans the entire year, and encompasses your group’s entire budget, not just the budget for the project you’re applying for! It is okay to provide an estimate for this number if you don’t know the exact amount. It is also more than okay to apply for a Creation grant if you’re a new group or if your group currently has an operating budget of $0.00!!

If I keep the payment in my personal bank account, will I need to claim it on my personal income tax?

If you or another group member decides to keep the funding in a personal bank account, it won't be considered as part of your personal income for taxes . The contract and project closeout letter (provided after your final report is submitted ) can be provided if the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) asks why the individual received the large sum of money in their personal bank account. One important thing to note is that it's crucial for the person who received the funding to keep the contract, project closeout letter and all the receipts for four years . This is because the CRA may request an audit for this information within that time frame .

What do we mean by “trustee”?

The Creation Granting Program allows a group or collective to hold up to $30,000 grants in a group leader's personal bank account. However, if funds are larger than $30,000 and the group is unincorporated (i.e. not a registered charity, non-profit or organization), they will need to find an incorporated organization to support by trusting the grant. A trustee holds the grant funding for the grassroots or collective group, assumes the financial responsibility for managing the funds, and ensures that the project deliverables are completed. In addition, the trustee may choose to take a small admin fee for holding the responsibilities outlined above*. A grassroots or collective that is receiving less than $30,000 in funding may also choose to have a trustee if that is the better approach for their group/project. * Please include trustee admin fees in your budget proposal. These fees are an eligible expense (Creation will pay them)
