  • With mail-in ballots, advance polls, and final voting on election day, Canadians wound up re-electing another Liberal minority government.
  • As of September 27, new and returning elected representatives started orientation at the House of Commons.

So, what happens next? Since the same party will be leading the government as before the election, there won’t be a need for a complicated transfer of power, but there are some key things to look ahead to that will really set the tone for this session of parliament.

CRE’s Next Steps

  • The throne speech, mandate letters, and cabinet selection all have a huge impact on how the government works, where it actually puts its effort, and how much trust it has from the public and from the rest of parliament.
  • Another thing to keep in mind: during the campaign, Trudeau stated that if Canadians elected another minority government, he would call another election in 18 months’ time. That gives his government a year and a half to act on some pretty ambitious promises.
  • Over the coming weeks, we’ll be watching for plans on how this government plans to support Indigenous youth, meaningfully advance reconciliation, and fight systemic racism, and we’ll give you quick takes as those plans are announced.
  • CRE welcomes the Ministers to their new appointments and looks forward to working together to empower and build the capacity of Indigenous youth to lead.
