Our project is Season two of our podcast Spilling Labrador Tea Under Cedar Trees. Season 2 is titled: “Colonialism Around the World”, and we’ve been interviewing Indigenous youth from different parts of the world to learn about their colonial experience and cultural revitalization. So far, we’ve covered First Nations, Metis, and Inuit in Canada; then we interviewed folks from Korea and Mexico. Next up is Aotearoa (New Zealand), Zambia, and many more.

Today we are featuring responses from Katelynne Herchak of Spilling Labrador Tea Under Cedar Trees Podcast – Season Two: Colonialism All Around the World.

Q : Tell us about your group and project!
A : Our project is Season two of our podcast Spilling Labrador Tea Under Cedar Trees. Season 2 is titled: “Colonialism Around the World”, and we’ve been interviewing Indigenous youth from different parts of the world to learn about their colonial experience and cultural revitalization. So far, we’ve covered First Nations, Metis, and Inuit in Canada; then we interviewed folks from Korea and Mexico. Next up is Aotearoa (New Zealand), Zambia, and many more.
Q : As the youth running the project, what impact do you hope it will have?
A : As young people running the project, we hope to provide the space for Indigenous youth around the world to see themselves reflected in the stories shared, as well as to promote podcasting as an art and way of storytelling that is accessible.
Q : What is something you have learned?
A : We’ve learned so much from the guests we’ve had on the show! We’ve learned how swiftly colonial systems can take over. More importantly, we’ve learned about people’s stories of healing themselves and their families, what revitalization can look like, as well as how connected we are as Indigenous people.
Q : What is your favourite moment from running your project?
A : Our favourite moments so far from the show are definitely: group-crying during an interview because of the medicine shared through our conversation, taking the team to Toronto for ImagineNative, and always the unusual moment of folks recognizing your voice from somewhere.
We are so proud of the heart-work our young relatives like Katelynne Herchak from the Spilling Labrador Tea Under Cedar Trees team are doing across Turtle Island and are so lucky to be able to support them in their work.
