This initiative is aimed at non-Indigenous settlers of colour and engages participants in concrete discussions related to a variety of themes such as connecting to homelands, the nuanced experiences and responsibilities of settlers of colour, and the history of colonization and anti-Blackness in Canada.
Concerning Community consists of 6 workshops with 10-15 participants and will run from January – February 2024. Applications will be received through the IYR website.
To be eligible to participate in this program participants must be:
- Between the ages of 18-29
- Self-identify with the term “settler of colour”
- Currently reside in what is currently known as Canada.
Youth will receive a $200 honoraria for completing the program.
The program includes an in-depth discussion about the different types of settlers (refugees, migrants, etc.) including a specific examination of Blackness in Canada. Participants will engage in 6 two hour workshops with activities addressing the themes mentioned above, and ongoing journaling. Participants will leave with resources for further development.
